Anatomic Pathology Board Review by J. Lefkowitch

Comments:

  • I found Leftkowich to be great for really cementing knowledge that I had gained from otehr resources, great way to tie it all together. The question stems and answers are much longer than those on the actual test, however they are good for making sure you understand what you've learned, as they test many tidbits simultaneously.

Osler Pathology Board Review Course

Comments:

  • "I used the osler mp3 files and notes to study and I thought they were essential to my success in passing the boards. I didn't attend the review course but I think it was much better to be able to stop the lecture, or back up and listen to what I missed a second time."- Emily Green (board certified in 2009)
  • "Osler was very effective."
  • "Osler was the best of those I attended. I also attended the ASCP course."
  • "Osler was great. Very helpful in getting me into the right frame of mind for studying and passing the boards the first time."
  • "Osler Live Lecture course was very high-yield; great way to meet residents from other institutions and trade tips; the microscopes at the Tampa course were virtually identical to those at the exam."

Surgical Pathology Unknown Conference (Johns Hopkins University)

Comments:

  • I used Johns Hopkins cases for a "brain-break" when I didn't feel like I could study any longer. I found running through 3-5 cases felt more like a video game when I had been reading for a long time, and left me feeling more energetic to resume studying. In topics that I hadn't seen as high of volume in (bone!), I went through all the cases, to increase my exposure.

Performance Improvement Program in Surgical Pathology (PIP)
Rate this resource!<

Comments: Great way to practice going through glass slides quickly, a skill that I was not strong in during my training, but that is necessary for good boards performance!

Robbins Basic Pathology, 8th Ed. by Kumar, Cotran, and Robbins

Comments: Always good for looking up basic science connections and nice general facts about tumors.

Pathology Outlines (Pathology Outlines, LCC)
Rate this resource!</u

Comments: I use this extensively while doing my own case preparation and studying, but I didn't find it especially helpful for boards. I will admit, sometimes when you're reading and something just isn't making sense ("Will that stain be postive? What is the most important of the prognostic factors?"), this website is generally a good, quick resource.

Rosai and Ackerman’s Surgical Pathology, 10th Ed. by J. Rosai

Comments: I love reading Sternberg for my own case knowledge and learning, but it's really dense. Probably too dense for boards.

Differential Diagnosis in Surgical Pathology, 2nd Ed. by Gattuso, Reddy, David, Spitz, and Haber

Cytopathology Review. Paperback

  • A great review book for cytopatholgoy for the AP boards or the Cytopathology boards.
  • Tons of questions, but it goes quickly.
  • If you are taking the AP boards, do the Gynecologic chapter and the Thyroid chapter at least.
  • Good pictures.
  • Clear, concise explanations.

Comments: Great resource if you continuously find yourself mixing up two entities, chances are they'll have them listed out with clear and concise comparisons.

Comments:

  • "Excellent and thorough."
  • "I wish I had attended this sooner like during my 2nd or 3rd year."
  • "ASCP review course was very helpful to attend, but the questions they provied for review were lacking."

Koneman's Color Atlas and Textbook of Diagnostic Microbiology, 6th Ed by Elmer W. Koneman

Comments:
The color plates are great for a reference for how bacteria should look. I found that comparing what I was seeing in person to the color plates helped me learn the variation in color and growth that you can expect to see. Another tip: I looked through control plates for organisms with one of our microbiology techs, and for each one, we talked about the biochemical tests needed for workup. Great way to review!

Henry’s Clinical Diagnosis and Management by Laboratory Methods, 2nd Ed by R. McPherson, M. Pincus
Rate this resource!</u

Comments:
Very dense, but great for when you're really trying to learn it the first time around. Probably a bit much once you're in review mode. The Review Book (the one with questions) is nice for a quick look-through, but I wouldn't consider it necessary.
