Volunteer Opportunity in Eritrea

Exciting Opportunity in International Pathology! The Orotta Post-Graduate School in Eritrea is starting a residency training program in anatomical pathology and is seeking a director. The successful candidate will be a certified anatomic pathologist, preferably with an interest in cytology, committed for at least one year to teach Eritrean residents in Asmara, as well as integrating visiting professors coming to teach sub-specialty subjects. It is anticipated that teaching will take place during sign out, formal didactic sessions, journal club, interdisciplinary rounds and in other ways. Similar post-graduate programs in surgery, pediatrics and ob/gyn are currently in place, under the guidance of George Washington University, with internal medicine starting soon. It is anticipated that three residents will be accepted into a 3 year program, starting in July 2011. A histopathology laboratory currently processes approx. 1100 surgical specimens and 1000 non-gyne cytologies, including many FNAC's, a year, primarily from the adjacent teaching hospital. Housing and a small salary will be provided. The real reward however is the opportunity to help create a pathology program in a low resource nation and train motivated residents to become their country's future leaders in pathology.
